Where Recap keeps your files

Everything Recap stores lives under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Recap\. You can move raw footage and final clips to other folders in Settings.

• Clips are organized as clips\<date>\<symbol>\..., so finding a specific trade’s clip on disk is straightforward.
• Clips are lossless. They’re copied straight from your recorded footage at full quality — nothing is re‑compressed. (When audio recording is on, the un‑muted tracks are mixed into each video clip’s audio track; the video itself is still untouched.)
• Raw footage is bounded. A retention policy ages out old recordings by age and size (see Settings); your saved clips are never touched by retention. You can also delete a single recording by hand from the Timeline when you want the space back sooner.
• Audio tracks live inside each session next to the per‑screen footage: sessions\<session>\audio-desktop\ and sessions\<session>\audio-mic\ hold rotating .m4a segments, and each trade’s clip folder gains a small .m4a per track (that’s what the replay deck’s per‑track mute/volume plays). Retention treats them like any other footage.

Upgrading from an older install

Recap was previously called TapeDeck and kept everything under %LOCALAPPDATA%\TapeDeck\. The first time you launch Recap, that folder’s clips, raw footage, connectors, and database move to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Recap\, and the clip locations stored in the database are updated to match. Nothing is copied, so the move is instant however large your library is.

If anything blocks the move, Recap keeps using the old folder and your library stays intact — the folder name is the only thing left stale. Storage locations in Settings always shows the folders actually in use.

Backing up your clips

Your clips are ordinary .mp4 files. To keep them, copy the clips\ folder (or your chosen clips folder) anywhere you like — an external drive, a synced folder, wherever. No export step needed.
